How to Write an APA Research Paper

APA stands for American Psychological Association. This is a citation style which is usually used in formatting psychology papers. Furthermore, this particular style can used in works on social sciences, nursing, education, and humanities. Utermpaper.com's handy guide will show you how to appropriately format your research paper in accordance with the APA style.

The general format of an APA paper includes the following rules:

  • 1-inch margins on all the sides of each page
  • 12 pt. Font Size
  • Page number on the right side of the page
  • Use of a clear and readable font- APA recommends the use of Times New Roman
  • A heading at the top of each page which includes the shortened essay title. It should be less than 50 characters.
  • Double space for paragraphs.

In addition, the APA essay format needs to be divided into four different sections:

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Main body
  • References

The cover page will be the first page of your term paper. The abstract will cover the next page, and then the main body. The final page will include your bibliography or references which our term paper writing service will provide at no extra charge.

Title Page

This page is also known as the cover page. It usually includes the topic of your essay, term paper or research paper, your name, and the name of the institution.

A page header should be included at the top left section of the page, and a page number should be indicated at the top right section of this page.

All the text in your paper, including the cover page, should be double-spaced.

Your title needs to be centred in the upper half of the cover page.

Abstract

The abstract should be on the next page after the cover page. It should have a header on the top left part of the page.

On the first line of the page- you should centre the word “Abstract.” You should not include any extra formatting (no quotation marks, underlining, italics, bold, etc.)

APA Citation Guide

When using the APA style in-text citations, you will need to do the following:

  • Capitalize author initial and name
  • When you are referring to the source title, you should capitalize all the letters
  • Underline or italicize titles of longer works such as television series, albums, music, documentaries, movies, and books.
  • Put quotations around song titles, television series episodes, and articles
  • In case the author has not been named, you can place the name of the author, year of publication, and the page number in parentheses after the citation.
  • In quotations which are more than 40 words, the block quotes can be used. The quote should be indented ½ from the left margin in a brand new paragraph.

When paraphrasing or summarizing, you input your in-text reference (year of publication and author). The page number here is optional.
